Virtus Vinery

It was founded at the end of 2010 and is located on the territory of the Mlava region – Požarevac wine-growing hills. The vineyards cover a 27.5 hectares land complex in Viteževo, between Žabari and Svilajnac, 15 kilometres from the Beograd-Niš motorway. During 2011 and 2012 we cultivated grapevine seedlings in the area of 15 hectares and started with the phase-construction of the winery complex. The major part of the technological and administrative facilities has been completed at present. The founders of the winery are a group of good friends, enthusiasts, who have been brought together by a shared love of wine and the idea that only team work can create good results.

With a desire to get prime quality wines, we have imported grape seedlings from France and have established vineyards with the following varieties: Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Marselan and Prokupac.

Fantastic geo-climate conditions of this region allow for grapevine cultivation today, as well as thousands of years ago, which is corroborated by archaeological excavation of sites from the Antiquity. The presence of grapevine in Serbia has also been proven by the fossil remains from the Bronze Age.

Today we also bear witness to a new wave in wine production. By relying on our history and tradition, we try to pick up on the trend in the development of the Serbian viniculture. We hope to make our wines famous even outside our country and that we will manage to convey a part of its spirit through the drops of our wines.

With the slogan “Read the wine – taste the history” we wanted to remind people that our country has been a part of the great Danube civilization, of the then technologically most advanced society in the world, before the Ancient Rome and Greece, before Mesopotamia. The Danube culture has left us testimonies of the roots of literacy – a script or symbols that date way back before the cuneiform script. Our renowned painter Isidora Ivanović has used these symbols and a stylized figure in our labels with a desire to make our wine lovers – history lovers. The most beautiful remains from that age are the figurines that have inspired the appearance of our wines and our motto. They depict figures with large eyes, symbolizing care and attention, and they all have broadly spread arms as a symbol of cordiality and warm welcome.

sauvignon blanc-slovo1Virtus

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc is considered a classic among aristocratic white wines. Like every great variety of vineyards, Sauvignon Blanc is the “baby” of the land on which it grows. Its aroma is permeated with an unusually strong varietal note which changes depending on the region in which it grows.

Character
Virtus’s Sauvignon Blanc wine is dominated by the aroma of the elder flower and melons, supplemented by discrete mineral notes and tones of mown grass and herbs: basil, coriander, i.e. parsley, chives, dill, marjoram, rosemary, sage, thyme, mint and nettle.

It has a distinctive bouquet, exceptional freshness and lightness, with well-balanced acids and alcohol. The wine is dry, of light yellow colour with greenish reflections, crystal clear, and when tasted it feels full, fresh and crisp. The richness and fullness of the wine with discreet shades of vanilla, which further refine its aromatic complex, are complemented by the fact that one part fermented and aged in barriques and French oak barrels.

Food matches for Sauvignon Blanc include:
White meat, including turkey, pork, seafood and freshwater fish, crabs, clams, shrimps and lobster. Cheeses – soft, salty and sour. Vegetables and vegetarian food – sautéed green vegetables, cucumber salad with yogurt and dill, and pasta with zucchini, béchamel sauce, Parmesan cheese and mushrooms.

Pinot Grigio

Pinot Grigio is a symbol of summer, tasty food and simple natural products. Variety Pinot Grigio and Pinot Blanc are two varieties originating from the mutation of noble Pinot Noire. It is successfully grown in the chilly mountainous region of Oregon, as well as in Sicily. In Alsace, Pinot Gris, as it’s called there, renders rich, fragrant white wines with the notes of walnut, smoke, spices and sometimes honey. This variety is known in our country as Sivi Burgundac.

Character
The Pinot Grigio wine made in our wineries is of straw-yellow colour with copper hues indicating the natural process of production of white wine from brown-red grapes and already at first sight the extractivity and exceptional complexity of this wine can be seen. It is produced and kept in stainless steel vessels (90%) and barrique barrels made of French oak (10%), which helps maintain its freshness and the aroma of tropical fruits, ripe pears, melons, apples and white nectarines. Enhanced by the oak when tasted it is rich and full, slightly creamy and buttery, and fills the glasses with the aroma of honey and fresh dates, still retaining the taste of fruitiness in the forefront. All of this, well balanced out, contributes to the complexity and uniqueness of this wine, which constitutes a mandatory part of a summer meal eaten in open air.

Food matches for Pinot Grigio include:
Mediterranean cuisine, seafood, pasta, risotto with seafood

Virtus

Gewürztraminer

he Gewürztraminer variety is one of 18 noble wine varieties, often referred to as “adult” Muscat. The prefix “Gewürz” meaning “savoury” refers to the aroma of this variety that comes from northern Italy (formerly South Tyrol). The wine is fragrant, floral, resembling the finest Turkish delight, primarily because of the expressive notes of rose petals and then of its strangely oily structure.

Character

Virtus’s Gewürztraminer is surprisingly dry wine, but because of its intense aroma, increased alcohol content and slightly lower total acidity content, it appears sweeter than it actually is. The most characteristic smell of Gewurztraminer is the aroma of litchi and Turkish delight made of rose, while at the same time one can recognize the aroma of red grapefruit, ginger, pineapple and lighted incense. Sophisticated and moderately full-bodied, this wine, well chilled, is a true pleasure during hot summer days.

Food matches for Gewürztraminer include:

Goose liver pate, smoked ham, smoked trout or herring, chicken salad, hard sheep’s and cow’s milk cheeses, fresh fruit.

Rose

Rosé and pink wines are not as popular as white or red ones, probably due to lack of information about them. Those familiar with these plentiful, natural wines never diminish their value, both because of the complex manufacturing technology and their magnificent flavour and the richness in antioxidants that help us with retaining our youth.

Rosé is wine that is rightly linked to summer and the heat because it can be very cool without any fear of losing “its body.” Rosé goes well with different foods. Because of this particular feature, many treat it with certain mistrust. But in the last ten years, winemakers have been successfully coping with such a reputation of Rosé, so today the growing popularity of this wine does not surprise anyone.

Character
With its bright pink rose colour, with reddish reflections, crystal clear, it appears that the pride of Virtus Winery is our real artwork. Virtus’s Rosé has intense aroma of red berries, strawberries and red currants originating from Prokupac variety and spicy fragrance which is credited to Cabernet Sauvignon. The small amount of residual sugar does not interrupt its fruitiness and freshness which prevail, thus creating a real harmony in the flavour of this wine.

Grape varieties
Prokupac 70% and Cabernet Sauvignon 30%

Food matches for Rose include:
Seafood, grilled chicken, light snacks

Prokupac

Prokupac is an old Serbian native variety, indigenous to our region. Many winemakers, faithful to the Serbian tradition have been renewing this variety thus contributing to and developing the domestic wine identity.

Character
Virtus Winery’s Prokupac is wine of deep red colour, with the aroma of ripe red fruit, complemented with the aromas of cherry liqueur and cocoa with specific mineral notes characteristic for our ‘territory.’ The taste is fruity, soft, with pronounced sweet tannins, well fitted to this elegant and fine balanced wine, while the aging of a part of this wine in oak barriques has contributed to its elongated finish.

Fermentation and aging
Fermented in large oak barrels and aged partially in stainless steel with the major part aged in Serbian oak barriques.

Food matches for Prokupac include:
Red meats, game, roast lamb.

marselan-slovo1Virtus

Marselan

Marselan is a variety which first appeared in France in 1961 by crossing varieties Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache. It was originally grown in the Rhone Valley in France, then in Switzerland, California and Spain. This is a relatively new variety, very interesting because of its intense, deep, ruby red colour, very rich fruity-floral aromas of berries and June cherries, with elegant tannins that are well embedded into the structure of the wine. Its style is located between Cabernet Sauvignon and Granache, demonstrating the virtues of both varieties. Marselan highlights the exhilaration and vibrancy of Granache combined with the structure and elegance of Bordeaux like Cabernet Sauvignon.

Character
Virtus Winery’s Marselan has intense, ruby red colour, it is fruity with aromas of ripe blackberries, sour cherries, tobacco and dark chocolate, with addition of black wild berries jam and a hint of oak. The wine is very extractive, complex and elegant with well balanced velvety tannins. Majority of the wine has aged in oak barriques thus contributing to the fullness of the body and a long finish. It also hides a great potential which is revealed through careful tasting to true wine lovers.

Food matches for Marselan include:
Steak with intense sauces, veal, lamb shank with rosemary and garlic, hard cow’s milk cheeses.

Virtus

CREDO red

Noble red wine with extra-fullness and minerality resulting from blending four varieties from the Virtus’s vineyards: Prokupac 30%, Marselan 30%, Cabernet Sauvignon 30% and Pinot Noire 10%.

Character
Each of the mentioned grape varieties has left a mark on the final lasting impression of this wine. Prokupac was in charge of lightness and minerality, Marselan of fruitiness and fullness, Cabernet gave it the structure and vitality, and from Pinot Noir it has inherited all the sophistication innate in this variety. Aged for 14 months in 225-litre French and American oak barriques.

The wine has an intense ruby red colour. The scent of gorgeous fruit aromas, slightly mineral and spicy, rounded by the fine elements of oak, vanilla and tobacco smoke, gave this wine expressive fullness with ripe tannins and a juicy long finish.

Food matches for Virtus Credo Red include:
Red meat, mutton patties, ribs in cream, roasted lamb, game sausages, hard sheep’s and cow’s milk cheeses of intense smell, as well as blue cheeses and gorgonzola.

Virtus

CREDO white

Cuvée of golden yellow colour and moderate fragrance is a combination of wealth and sophistication. Three types of noble grapes, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and Gewurztraminer, gave three noble wines that are carefully tended for 9 months in French oak barrels before being carefully blended into Virtus’s Credo white.

Character
Tropical aromas of citrus are only half of the story; there is something more in this white wine – green herbal notes, dill, cut grass, ripe apricot, baked apples spiced with nutmeg, and vanilla with a hint of smoke. The taste of Virtus’s Credo white is much richer than each individual wine that has taken part in its creation, leaving the impression of “fat” wine of viscous structure with a slight indication of honey and a long finish.

Fermentation and aging
A smaller part in inox and the majority in French oak barriques and barrels

Food matches for Virtus Credo White include:
This wine pairs up well with dishes made with butter or cream, so it should be tried with smoked salmon or cooked salmon with capers in butter sauce, veal cutlets in porcini sauce, manta ray in black butter sauce, pork tenderloin in apple sauce, chicken in cream mushroom sauce and hard sheep’s and cow’s milk cheeses.

Virtus

Pinot noir

The famous French grape variety, Burgundy’s hallmark, has a longstanding tradition that dates back as far as the 14th century. It requires particular growing conditions and special care at the vineyard that ensure top quality wine, and it still found its place in vineyards around the world.

Pinot Noir is a gentle and very sensitive variety, and its qualities present a great challenge before any winemaker.

The wines made from this variety are elegant and sophisticated and—depending on their quality and origin—they can be quite expensive.

Character

The 2014 Virtus Pinot Noir is complex, full-bodied, and deep ruby red in color—which is not so characteristic of the variety, but focused and diligent effort combined with climate attributes that have stayed with this variety from the vineyard to the last barrel have birthed a truly extraordinary Pinot .

If you peek into a glass of this noble wine, you will be overwhelmed bythe smell of ripe cherries, intertwined with black forest fruit, cocoa, and smoke. Layered but elegant in the mouth, with velvety tannins and a long finish, this wine agedfor 20 months in new French barriques.

Culinary recommendations for Virtus Pinot Noir

This wine will pair well with different dishes ranging from venison, veal, and lamb specialties, as well as duck or turkey topped with red fruit sauce.
